The Naked Truth: Why We Suggest Floating Nude at Red Lotus Float

It’s the number one question we get from first-time floaters—usually whispered with a bit of a grin or a nervous tilt of the head: "So... what do I actually wear in there?"

If you’ve been picturing yourself in a high-tech wetsuit or your favorite beach day bikini, we’re here to give you the "bare" facts. While you are always welcome to wear what makes you comfortable, we almost always suggest floating completely nude.

Here is why "going rogue" is the secret to the best float of your life.

1. The Goal is "Sensory Deprivation" (Not "Sensory Distraction")

The entire point of a float cabin is to remove external stimuli. We want to trick your brain into forgetting where your body ends, and the water begins.

Even the most comfortable swimsuit becomes a giant distraction in the tank. As you drift, you’ll start to notice:

  • The waistband is digging in slightly.

  • A strap shifting on your shoulder.

  • The fabric holds cold water against your skin.

  • The loose fabric is brushing against your skin.

In a space designed to make you feel weightless and "body-less," a swimsuit acts like a physical anchor, constantly reminding your brain that you’re wearing something.

2. Your Skin Wants to Breathe

We use over 1,000 pounds of medical-grade Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) in every cabin. Magnesium is a miracle mineral for muscle recovery, stress relief, and skin health. When you float nude, your entire body is in direct contact with the water, allowing for maximum absorption without fabric getting in the way.

3. Keeping It Pristine

We take our water quality seriously. Swimsuits—even clean ones—can carry traces of laundry detergent, fabric softeners, or lint. By floating nude, you help us keep our floats as pure and chemical-free as possible.

"But... What About Privacy?"

We totally get it! If the idea of being nude feels a bit daring, remember this: Your float experience is 100% private.

  • Private Suites: You are in a locked, private room with your own personal shower and float cabin.

  • Total Control: You are the only one who enters that room, and you are the only one who sees you.

  • Lights Out: Most people choose to float with the internal cabin lights off. In the pitch black, it doesn't matter what you're wearing (or not wearing)—you’re just a mind floating in space!

If You Prefer to Wear a Suit

We completely understand that for some, a bathing suit provides a level of comfort that makes it easier to relax. If "suit up" is your mantra, we ask that you follow these "Pro-Float" tips to keep our water pristine and your car salt-free:

  • Wear your least restrictive suit with as little material as possible: This will help minimize sensory distraction.

  • Rinse, Rinse, and Rinse Again: Please ensure your suit is freshly laundered and thoroughly rinsed. Residual laundry detergents, perfumes, and fabric softeners can cause the float water to foam or cloud, which disrupts the experience for everyone. (And can cause an additional cleaning fee.)

  • The "Salty Drip" Factor: Remember that the cabin's water is 30% salt. When you step out, that salt stays in your suit's fabric.

  • Bring a Ziploc Bag: We highly recommend bringing a large, gallon-sized Ziploc or a waterproof "wet bag." No one wants a salt-soaked swimsuit dripping on our floors, or worse, leaving white salt crust all over your gym bag or car upholstery on the drive home!

The Final Verdict

If you truly feel more relaxed in a suit, wear it! We want you to feel safe and comfortable above all else. However, if you’re looking for that "transcendental, I-don't-have-a-body" feeling that pro athletes and Zen masters rave about, nude is the way to go.

Ready to try it for yourself? Book your private suite at Red Lotus Float today and see why the best way to "gear up" for a float is to wear nothing at all.
